In November and December 2016, I am helping to organise and will be showing work at East Finchley Open’s ‘Breaking Boundaries’ exhibition. I helped formulate the brief for the exhibition, which is for all the participants to push forward their creative boundary in some way. Artists Statement’s were prepared and mine reads as follows:
EVERY ARTIST, IN WHATEVER MEDIA THEY WORK IN, OCCUPIES A ‘CREATIVE TERRITORY’. HAVING A ‘TERRITORY’ IMPLIES THAT THERE IS A ‘BOUNDARY’ TO IT. THAT BOUNDARY IS ALWAYS BEING PUSHED BACK, IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. ‘BREAKING BOUNDARIES’ IS A POSITIVE AND REITERATIVE PROCESS. I AM VERY AWARE IN MY WORK OF THE PROCESS OF TRYING NEW THINGS….SOMETIMES, IT MIGHT BE A SMALL STEP FORWARD, LIKE DECIDING WHETHER A PHOTOGRAPH BE COLOUR, BLACK & WHITE OR A TINT. OTHER TIMES, IT CAN BE MORE OF A RADICAL JUMP, LIKE ATTEMPTING NEW PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES OR PLACING NEW MATERIALS ON MY PHOTOGRAPHS. IT IS THIS LATTER THEME THAT I AM NOW TAKING FORWARD. PLACING CLEAR, TRANSLUCENT AND TEXTURED GELS ONTO A PHOTOGRAPH IS FOUNDED IN THE IDEA OF ALLOWING THE VIEWER TO CHANGE THE OPTICAL QUALITIES OF AN IMAGE, BY MOVING AS SHE/HE OBSERVES IT. IT IS THE PHOTOGRAPHER TO VIEWER RELATIONSHIP THAT THESE IMAGES FOCUS ON AND, IN SO DOING, A NEW CREATIVE APPROACH IS PRESENTED. ANY COMMENTS ON THE ‘FEET MOVEMENT’ AND ‘FLICKS OF LIGHT…’ SERIES ARE WELCOMED, SINCE THIS WILL HELP ME TO DEVELOP IDEAS AND BREAK MORE BOUNDARIES!!
